We were honored to be invited to an advanced screening of The Wild Life this past Saturday. This is a very sweet and cute movie filled with adventure, and fun for the whole family. It has great characters, an interesting story line, and uses a sense of humor appropriate for kids of all ages. I really liked the animator's work, and how colorful the graphics were. All the characters were cute, and had interesting personalities. Lately I have been very much into birds, so I really enjoyed the characters of Mak, the parrot, and Kiki, the kingfisher bird. However, all the characters are so much fun, and their sense of friendship gives a strong message, in my opinion, to the audience. I have always believed that family is not necessarily those of the same specie. Sometimes our family can get a little furry, scaly, and/or feathery.

We also received a very fun survival kit from The Wild Life with some cool promotional items, which would come in very handy if we were in a deserted island adventure of our own.


We got some very cool promotional posters with the characters from the movie, which captures their fun personalities, as shown in the picture above. As you can see in the picture below, we also got a coloring book with some color pencils, a pair of toy binoculars, so that we can explore, and see if any ships are heading our way when playing pretend. We also got an awesome promotional t-shirt with our favorite characters from the movie. And just to be safe in The Wild Life Adventure, the survival kit also included a Hawaiian Tropic Sunscreen lotion. Being well protected against the UVA & UVB rays is a must in any outdoor adventure.





There have been so many stories about shipwrecks throughout time, that once again it got me thinking. I don't know about you, but I like to feel prepared for any type of situation, and that includes ending up stranded with my family in a deserted island. Would you know where to find shelter? Or would you be able to find food and water? Would you have a rescue plan, or would you have to learn how to start a fire to stay warm at night? There are always many ideas and thoughts that cross my mind when I think about it, and this time, we've been invited to share with you 5 items we'd bring with us if we were to go to a deserted island.

Considering that this would be hypothetical, since you are never really ready to end up in a shipwreck, here are our 5 must-have items to take to a deserted island with our family:



1) A Magnifying Sheet: This is a very handy tool if you want to be able to easily start a fire that will keep you and your family warm during the nights, and to help you cook any fish you catch. However, not to be used for this means if you are a child. Better leave mommy and daddy to the chore. Making a circle out of rocks in an area far away from foliage will keep you and your family safe in the deserted island, and won't destroy the vegetation. Plus the light from the fire, could potentially be noticed by ships cruising by, leading to your family's rescue. Though there are fire starting kits for sale, they are very likely bulkier than this practical item, which we keep in our emergency kit for the same reason. Oh and yeah, you would have to start the fire before the sun sets, since it's a solar powered utility, so to speak.

2) A Can Opener: I know this one sounds goofy, but let me tell you one thing. If you pay attention to any "modern life" movies about people on deserted islands, somehow, castaways always end up finding loads of cans of food, and end up frustrated with  no way of opening them to access the food. Yup, in all of those cases, something as common as a can opener can really save your life--or your sanity from eating fruits or fish all the time.

3) A Crank Radio: You may wonder why we chose this as one of our 5 items to take to a deserted island. Well, the answer is simple. When you are by yourselves on an island, your mind may need some distraction out of frustrating days. With a crank radio, you don't need batteries ever, and you can enjoy of some music, stay up-to-date with any news that you may need to hear while far away, especially weather reports; you really want to be ready for any potentially dangerous storms heading your way. Who knows, you may even hear when a cruise may be passing by, and be ready with your fire to make strong smoke signals. I must say that it is always better when your crank radio is also a flashlight; you may need one when "nature" calls in the middle of the night, and you really, REALLY have to go.

4) A Multi-tool Knife: Though it's ideal that only mommy and daddy are in charge of this item, I must say that it made it to our 5 item list, because you definitely need something really sharp when you are going to be on a deserted island. You need it to cut rope for building things such as shelters. You may need it to clean your potential dinner. It may come in very useful as a first-aid tool too; sometimes you have to remove injured skin in order for it t heal better. I know, sounds gross, but a very sharp knife does work for this--plus if you heat it up, it can help you cauterize a nasty wound.

Lastly but not least, after talking about items that can help us with: fire, for warmth and for smoke signals, means to be able to eat either canned food, or cleaning a fish, an item to assist us with the construction of shelter, and something to keep  you and your family informed and sane, there is one last item, which I consider probably one of the most important ones.

5) An Advanced Water Filtration System: Though I don't believe it works with sea water, most islands have some source of drinking water. The only problems is that you may not be the only ones drinking from that source, and you have to consider that some animals like cleaning themselves inside such water sources, including ourselves. Therefore, being able to have a way of drinking the water without worrying about things such as E-Coli, Salmonella, and Protozoa, is a very good idea.

A little tip. You don't really need a compass if you can see the sun. An easy trick is to find out where the sun comes out, and set your palm straight towards that direction. Then your left arm straight in a 180 degree angle will be automatically pointing west. Therefore you will be facing North and your back South. That way, you know where to go, or look. So no need for a compass really.

And there you have it. Those are our main 5 items we would take with us, if we could, to a deserted island. Though if we had 5 items by individual, I am sure that there would be all sorts of cool things that all our family members would bring, such as: paper and pen/pencil to write a journal of all of our adventures; seeds, to grow our own food while they rescued us; solar decorative lights, could come in handy to point out our way to our shelter; googles, to see underwater while looking for other means of food; solar powered gadgets; any and all that could make our life in a deserted life easier and more practical. At the end, home is where the family is, and if you put your heart and minds to it, together you can survive anything!

Este Sábado, fuimos honrados con una grata invitación para asistir a el avance de la película The Wild Life. Esta es una película tierna y conmovedora llena de aventuras y diversión para toda la familia. Uno puede apreciar una interesante historia, con personajes grandiosos, y un sentido del humor apropiado para pequeñines de todas las edades. En verdad disfruté mucho el trabajo de animación, y o colorido de los gráficos. Los personajes por mayoría eran adorables, y tenían personalidades muy peculiares. Últimamente he estado fascinada con aves, así que disfruté mucho de los personajes de Mak, el loro, y de Kiki, el martín pescador. Sin embargo, todos los personajes son muy divertidos, y en nuestra opinión, su sentido de amistad demuestra un mensaje importante a toda la audiencia. Siempre he creído que una familia no es necesariamente de la misma especie. Aveces nuestra familia puede ser un poco peluda, escamosa, y algo emplumada.

También recibimos un muy divertido kit promocional de la película, el cual también tiene algunos artículos muy útiles si tuviéramos nuestra propia aventura en una isla desierta.


Recibimos unos posters promocionales muy padres con los personajes de la película, los cuales han capturado las personalidades divertidas de los anteriormente mencionados. Como se muestra en la foto inferior, también recibimos un libro para colorar con unos lápices de colores, un par de binoculares de juguete para explorar y ver si hay algún barco dirigiéndose hacia nuestra dirección mientras usamos la imaginación. En el kit, también recibimos una playera promocional con todos nuestros personajes favoritos de la película. Y para estar alistados en nuestra aventura de The Wild Life, el kit de supervivencia divertido también incluía una crema bloqueadora de sol Hawaiian Tropic. Estar bien protegidos contra los rayos UVA y UVB son esenciales en cualquier aventura al aire libre.



Con tantas historias sobre naufragios atrevés de los tiempos, nuevamente nos preguntamos; ¿Qué haríamos nosotros en el lugar de Robinson Crusoe? No sé ustedes, pero a mi me gusta estar preparada para cualquier situación, y esto incluye el terminar varada con mi familia en una isla desierta. ¿Sabrán ustedes como encontrar refugio, o encontrar agua y alimentos? ¿Acaso sabrán como iniciar un plan de rescate, o incluso como iniciar una fogata para no congelarse durante las noches? Hay muchas ideas que pasan por mi mente cuando me pongo a pensar en esta situación, y en esta ocasión, se nos invitó a compartir cuales son los 5 artículos que llevaríamos con nosotros a una isla desierta.

Considerando que esto sería hipotético, ya que uno realmente nunca planea y está listo para quedar varado en una isla desierta durante un naufragio. Así que aquí están nuestros 5 artículos necesarios, si fuésemos a una isla desierta con nuestra familia:


1) Una lupa flexible: Este es un artículo muy eficiente y muy útil para iniciar una fogata que evitará que la familia se congele por las noches. Una fogata no solo tiene esta función, sino que en este caso te vendrá útil para cocinar peces u otros alimentos. Sin embargo, este es un proceso de el cual solo los pápis y las mámis estarán encargados ya que es un tanto peligroso para los chiquitines. Lo ideal es construir un círculo con rocas para controlar el área de la fogata, y construir esta alejada de la forestación. De esta forma, mantendremos el hogar de otros animalitos a salvo, y fuente de frutos también. La luz de una fogata también viene a salvarnos ya que si es grande lo suficiente, el humo puede atraer barcos que pasen en el momento adecuado para verles. Aun que hay kits especializados para crear fogatas, tienden a ser un poco abultado, así que una lupa como esta me parece más práctico. Y por obvias razones hay que considerar iniciar la fogata antes que se ponga el sol, ya que está funciona con "energía solar", já. 

2) Un Abre Lata: Ya sé que van a decir que suena cómico, pero dejen les platico porque. Si ponen atención, en la mayoría de las películas modernas de naufragios, los personajes de una u otra forma terminan siempre encontrando latas de comida, pero quebrándose la cabeza por no encontrar forma alguna para abrir dichas latas. Y miren que una lata, sin abre latas, sí es muy difícil de abrir. Por si son peras o son manzanas, mejor tener uno y en el peor de los casos usar lo afilado de la navaja para algo, que no tener abre latas y usar latas de deliciosa comida como pisa papeles, u hojas de palmera en este caso. De perdido nos salvará de volvernos locos si encontramos latas de comida.

3) Un Radio de Manivela: Se preguntarán el porqué escogí un radio de manivela para uno de nuestros 5 artículos en caso de terminar en una isla desierta. La respuesta es simple. Cuando estás solo en una isla, es fácil que nuestro subconsciente empiece a jugar con nuestra mente, y la verdad que el escuchar la radio es una buena distracción, como lo es también el estar informados. Este tipo de radio no necesita baterías, y vendría muy práctico para estar listos en caso de alertas por clima como tormentas que podrían dirigirse hacia tu camino. También podría servir para ver si hay algún crucero pasando cerca, uno nunca sabe cuando un comercial de este tipo podría ser nuestra salvación. Debo continuar diciendo que lo ideal es tener uno de estos radios que también incluye linterna, ya que esta puede venir muy útil cuando "la naturaleza" llama a media noche y no te puedes aguantar.

4) Una Navaja Multiusos: Siendo que lo ideal es que este sea un artículo de el cual estén encargados los pápis y las mámis, aun así logró nuestra lista, ya que en definitiva, un utensilio afilado es muy útil en una isla desierta. Tanto para cortar soga para amarrar y construir diferentes cosas, como para limpiar un pez u otro animal a punto de cocinarse, como también su uso para primeros auxilios. Hay ocasiones en as cuales uno tenga que remover un área afectada de la piel para que pueda sanar adecuadamente. Ya sé, suena medio grotesco, pero una navaja bien afilada es necesario para ese tipo de situaciones, aparte que si se le calienta lo suficiente, también puede servir para cauterizar una herida.

Finalmente, después de haber compartido artículos que nos ayudarían a sobrevivir proporcionando vías para crear: Una fogata, tanto para cocinar, como para mantenernos con calor y hasta para hacer señales de humo; vías para podernos ayudar a alimentarnos de una forma sencilla pero pudiéndose lograr; un artículo que también nos ayudaría a construir un refugio y otras cosas útiles para nuestra supervivencia, y otro articulo para permanecer con sanidad, solo queda concluir con uno de los cuales consideramos el más importante de los 5 en esta lista.

5) Un Avanzado Sistema de Filtración para Agua: No creo que este artículo sirva para agua salada. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de las islas desiertas que tienen vegetación, suele haber agua dulce que puede potencialmente beberse. El problema es que pudiera ser que no fuésemos los únicos bebiendo agua de dicho lugar. Inclusive hay animales que disfrutan ducharse en este tipo de recursos de agua, quizá incluyéndonos nosotros. Y por ello, el poder tener la confianza en que uno podrá tomar agua que esté libre de el 99.99% de Salmonela, E-Coli (Cólera), y otras bacterias es tremenda idea y eso es lo que este artículo tiene como objetivo.

Un pequeño tip para no necesitar una brújula. El sol sale por el Este. Simplemente hay que identificar por donde sale el sol y apuntar con el brazo derecho en esa dirección. Estire su brazo izquierdo en un ángulo de 180° y estará apuntando con su brazo izquierdo el Oeste. Una vez en esta posición, usted está de frente al Norte y dándole su espalda al Sur. Y así no hay pierde. ¿Qué tal?

Y ahí lo tienen. Esos son los 5 artículos que nuestra familia se llevaría a una isla desierta si pudiéramos. Claro que si fuesen 5 artículos por persona, seguro habría otras cosas que podríamos llevar como; semillas para plantar árboles frutales y otros alimentos; lápiz y papel para escribir nuestras aventuras diariamente; todo tipo de artículos solares que pudieran ser útiles durante nuestra estancia; googles para cuando tratemos de atrapar otra cosa que no fuese un pez, y tantos otros artículos que seguro nos vendrían muy útiles en aventuras como las cuales viven nuestros amigos de The Wild Life, ya que en familia y unidos todos podemos sobrevivir cualquier cosa.
