The gateway to visit the 'otherside' in a cultural adventure alongside Miguel is getting near. Come along, and delight your eyes with colorful and fantastic scenes in the all new Disney•Pixar's "COCO", as we present to you the newest clip "Mariachi Plaza". Plus, watch the featurette "Crafting COCO", which illustrates the amount of research that went into the creation of this movie:; the art, the music, and all from the words of the talent behind the film--I even teared a little with this last one, since I am still very connected to my Mexican roots.

All hands hoay, for ocean, treasures, ships, and mysterious islands--that's right, Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is headed our way. In our opinion, a movie filled with fantastic adventures, very talented actors, and loads of laughter. Keep on reading to find out what we did for movie night, and for a chance to win a digital copy of your own, to enjoy at home.
Argh--okay, I admit it, I don't know how to talk like a pirate. Nonetheless, I do believe I know how to have fun like one. To celebrate the release of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, we created a treat inspired on a particular scene, which caught my eye from the beginning. (Warning, a bit of spoilers ahead). I instantly fell in love with the island 'no man could find', which was covered in 'stars' some translucent and some red, and I am sure that this feeling, was due to the fact that I like all things shiny. Who knows, maybe I was also a pirate in a previous life, argh! Anyhow, taking these concepts into consideration, here is what we came up with:
Ahoy! The 'Uncharted' Island Ice Cream Float
What you'll need:
- Blue Food Coloring: Preferably natural, however, you are free to use artificial if you so wish. If your natural food coloring looks more purple than blue, you can add a bit of baking soda, and due to the process of oxidation, it will start turning blue. Just be aware that it won't be as bright once all the ingredients are combined due to the chocolate ice cream's color.
- Transparent Root Beer: There is a particular brand that has no colorants in it, thus, making it transparent, and useful for this kind of projects. This brand also carries other flavors that are transparent too, just in case you prefer something rather than root beer.
- Chocolate Ice cream: This is to resemble the island, however, it is also an acquired taste. So if you prefer other flavors, life is all about experimenting and choosing your favorite. For the ice cream, we went with a particular brand that sells organic ice cream. But if you have a favorite, you can go ahead and use that one. After all, it is about treating yourself to something you will enjoy.
- Pomegranate seeds: We've discovered that these delicious jewels, go very well (in our opinion) with chocolate ice cream. It has become one of our new favorite ice cream garnishes. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
Add the food coloring in a separate glass, and add your root beer. This way, you can see if it needs a bit of baking soda to make it more blue-ish, and you can also control how concentrated you want the color to be. Serve the amount of ice cream desired in your Pirate-size mug (Just a plain mug, but hey, I am on a roll here). Gently pour the blue-ish root beer into your mug that contains the delicious chocolate ice cream. It will get as foamy as the sea. See--it's working, ha-ha! Then top it up with some jewels--I mean, pomegranate seeds: and enjoy! Because the chocolate ice cream color, may over power the root beer's, be aware that the blue tint may be faint. Don't feel discouraged, it will resemble a murky ocean, just like those infested with ghostly sharks. If you use artificial colors, the blue-ish tones might be more noticeable. It's all a mater of personal preference. Me? I just want to get to the part where I eat it, haha.
Just so you know, there is already an ice cream float similar to this one, called 'Brown Cow'. If you are already a fan of this treat, you might enjoy our version of this popular ice cream float. However, be aware that not all of the flavors that we like, may be of your own liking. Therefore, I would highly recommend for you to try one before creating many at the same time. Also, if you are not convinced about the float itself, just try adding the pomegranate seeds to the chocolate ice cream. After all, ice cream + fruit; you can't go wrong with those two. Also, there are many combinations of sodas out there from the same brand we used that are also transparent and could work great for this same treat. If you already have a favorite combination of soda and ice cream, we would love to read it in a comment below. I am sure that other readers will appreciate it too.
All-in-all, this was the perfect treat to welcome Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales into our home, and to endure one last heat-wave before fall really kicks in.
Time for some battleship, pirate-style!
Thanks to Allied Contigo, and Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, we got to have fun with this super cool Battleship Game inspired by the film. I think the ships totally rock! This was one of my favorite board games when I was a kid, so it was awesome to incorporate this to our movie night.
I think I am going to win this round!
Over all, we had a great time. We had a delicious treat, we played a fun game, and we had a fantastic time watching the crazy adventures that Captain Jack Sparrow gets into without even seeking them. This was such a great film, and I am truly happy to know that it is now part of our family's movie collection. Now we can watch our favorite pirates every time we feel like having a good laugh.
